Hi Andy,
Your wife is quite correct. The rules that apply are the Distant Selling 
Rule, that apply when you have
not been face to face with the supplier of the goods.  You have a seven day
cooling off period which starts when goods are delivered.
So even if the goods are perfect you can return them just because you have 
changed your mind.  However, under these rules the goods must be returned in 
good condition so this could be a problem.  I thought that most suppliers 
gave you three days to notify of damage in transit
I have had damaged goods delivered which I did not realize when I signed and 
the supplier has replaced them with no fuss.  As a precaution I now sign the 
delivery note and add 'unexamined'
