Barry, thanks for the suggestions. I am going to wait until I have a bit of sighted help here. I just tried doing the uninstall again, and although the machine didn't crash, after the restart the ie9 was gone and the ie8 had not been reinstated in its place. Ran system restore again and it got me back to the ie9 installation. In the meantime I'll keep using my faster more reliable xp machine!!
