Hi All,
I just wanted to set the record straight! Throughout the design of this
product we were very conscious of the products appearance. We did add
some styling where possible which would help to detract from some of the
bulk of the frames. Practically we had to house the electronics and
sensors. The electronics used are pretty much what you'd find in a
mobile phone these days, so they are small, but not small enough to
enable us to develop glasses as slim as you'd find in a high street
store.

We did some extensive evaluation with cane and dog users, so I'm not
surprised by the reactions! It is very much personal choice, as with
most wearable products. Functionally they do what they say they do.

So, we could have shelved the whole project, or we could deliver another
low cost, innovative product!
Regards
Alison

Hi Dean.

Why don't you order a set on 30 day home approval? If you don't like
them you can always send them back to RNIB. As for goggles, they don't
look or feel like them to me, but hey, I'm up against heavy competition
so I'll let the fashion conscious on here do all the running in that
regard LOLOL. I'm more interested in their practicality and usability
as an auxiliary mobility aid, and if you've read my lastest message on
here regarding their performance, you already know what my opinion is.

All the best, Ibrahim.

I'm undecided as whether to try them or not as I am a Guide Dog user and
can't decide if they will benefit me enough. As for being self
conscious, I can just about put up with walking round with one of those
small battery powered speakers clipped to my collar for my GPS so can't
imagine I would want to wear goggles. I did like what I saw of the
ultracane though and Ray seemed a good idea but I didn't want to lose a
hand by holding it so the glasses make a lot of sense.

Hi Jackie - the goggles-type thing was what I was afraid of!!! I'll still give them a shot though...

Hi Barry

I've tried them out and I think that they are quite good compared to the rest of the vibratory mobility aids like the Ultracane and Ray. They recognise something you are approaching at head height, and I'm five feet eight. But the glasses themselves look like goggles. They

are thick plastic, durable specs but are not glam. I walked with my cane and had them detect overhanging bushes and lamp-posts, not to mention a lorry that was parked in my way.

I felt too self-conscious. They feel like goggles you would wear if you were working with glass, sand or something protecting your eyes.

A good idea that leaves your hands free to hold a cane, dog and anything else, but not for me.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Hi Ibrahim, you comment on the build and wearability of these, and thanks for that.

have you had a chance to try their
functionality/practicality/effectiveness
yet? Your impressions would be welcome, as always!

All the best,

Hi Everyone.

I've just taken delivery of my RNIB sonic eye glasses, and first impressions are good. They feel sleek and are solidly built, and although they're made of plastic, they're rugged and durable not to mention quite comfortable. They have both audio and vibratory feedback and are charged via USB either via plugging the supplied cable in to a USB port on your PC or in to the supplied travel adaptor.

If anyone wants to know more about them, I'd be happy to answer any specific questions, but my general impression and probably a lasting one is that RNIB have yet again come up with a very useful product at

a fare price, certainly within the affordability range of most if not

all persons who feel they could use a sonic aid but who might be put off by the pricier alternatives.

All the best, Ibrahim.
