Hi Ibrahim, are Sight And Sound forcing them to sell at full retail? The RNIB buy it at trade price, not full retail.

Hi Jon.
The reason the RNIB charge the same price on JFW as do all other suppliers is because of the simple fact that they have to buy it in from Sight And Sound, the main UK distributor ffor Freedom Scientific products.

Depends how you define profit.
In the example that Iain gave, if a book costs more to produce than a print 
book, how are they making profit, by selling stuff at the same price? If
anything, they are making a loss. Do the math. Just because it costs the 
same, doesn't mean a company or charity is making profit.

No, I am not shocked and I think it only right that RNIB should sell goods
at the same price as other suppliers. We should remember that Selling is only part of the work which RNIB does and even here there are many areas of subsidy. If we take books for example, a book is genrally sold by RNIB 
at the same price as the print version. However, the cost of producing
that book is much greater than the print. If we were to be charged the
same price for audio books as the general market price, I don't think many
of us would be buying too many of them. Personally, I think there is too 
much of the expecting to get things cheaper within the blind community.

Hi everybody, I learnt something the other day that shocked me. It's
something that affects many of us. The RNIB as a charity is supposed to 
be a non profit organisation.
When I was researching prices of a product recently I found it strange 
that the RNIB charged the same as other suppliers. I took it up with a
friend at the RNIB, who confirmed to me that yes, they do make the same 
profit as other suppliers, but given their status as a non profit
organisation they're not allowed to call it profit, so call it
contribution.
 Given that any financial gain made on sale of something is profit
whatever they choose to call it it comes down to the same thing.
 It would be interesting to know how officially they reconcile being a
non profit organisation with their operating as a profit making one, that 


profit being made from those people they profess to be helping.
