I'll make one last attempt...

Being a not for profit organisation does not mean that every service or good
they sell has to be sold at cost price. The not for profit status; which is
not the same as charitable status; is to do with their whole business model.
They are not the same as Barclays, who have shareholders who would like
dividend payouts on their investment, even if they don't get any.
The RNIB is like every non profit making oorganisation I have come across in
that it makes money for the benefit of its members and the social projects
it works on. You can of course criticise what it does with the money but to
think that it is breaking some rule by profiting on goods and services is
just plain wrong.
It is what it does with any profits that matters here.

PS. No, I don't work for the RNIB.

Cheers all,
Karl

They are a non profit organisation. They are not allowed to sell for profit.
That's it and all about it. It doesn't matter a damn if you think they
should be able to. Yes, they can make money from other sources, but not by
selling products for profit. Or do you think it's fine for them to do
whatever they want to get money?

I am in no way a RNIB fan boy but where do you think they get the moneys
required to run their educational establishments and other services?
Some funds undoubtedly come from the state by way of grants but not all and
they have to raise the shortfall from other sources.

I can not say that I always agree with the way they spend the money they
raise, a lot of the tech projects are just a waste of time - who can forget
the ill fated electronic newspaper debacle, and I believe that they are too
top heavy in their management structure but that is another argument.
