Yes correct, it only applies when in the application and only for that
session.

Ok, another approach.

When in the application itself, press insert+v for the verbosity options,
press the end key to the symth and press space to make it off and press
enter to close it.  Now, jaws should be dead and not speaking.  When you
want jaws back, press insert+v to get it back.

How about because that's a pain in the arse, and it's sometimes nice to be

Hi why don't you set a hot key for jaws and then just use insert f4 and quit
jaws while using the application and then you can bring jaws back with the
hot key.
