I am not sure about the U.K., but in Europe, Finereader is very popular as an off-the-shelf ocr solution and you can walk into any Best Buy or Circuit city equivalent and buy a copy.

What you want is the professional version and if you can find it still, i would recommend getting a copy of FR 7 rather than FR 8 because some of the keyboard shortcuts are missing in version 8. I also find the scanning results with FR 7 faster and more reliable than with version 8. FR 8.0 introduces some new scanning and ocr methods and those probably have to mature a bit still.

I was able to modify that URL and reach a part of the Abbeyy site where I was able to download a try and buy version of Abbeyy finereader, however what I am not certain of now is whether I now have no choice but to buy online.
