Many thanks Roger. I'll get one from Maplin's
Maplin's do a 7 port powered hub (5 on the back, 2 on the front) for £19.99 and I have a printer, scanner, labelwriter, 250 gig HD and my wireless mouse running off it with no problems at all.
Roger
If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before.

Hi,
I have seen this with power supplies which are underrated. If you up the rating of the PSU, you will get the device working. This especially is the case if you have several USB ports in use at the same time - unplug all but the one you are trying to use, and it may work.
The easiest way around this is to get a powered hub.

Hi Folks,
A few weeks ago, I purchased a new combined scanner/printer. Unfortunately, although it came with an installation CD, I couldn't get it to work with my number 1 computer and have had to settle for using it entirely with my second machine.
Today, I have taken delivery of an external hard drive and am experiencing exactly the same problem. I have therefore come to the conclusion that the fault may lie with my USB 2 port. The device doesn't have a CD but when I plug it in I immediately get the message, "New hardware found." When I opt for automatic installation, the search begins and then continues without
achieving any sort of result. I've had a look in Device Manager and as far as I can tell, all USB ports are apparently working properly. I haven't got a clue as to what else I can do, so if anyone has further suggestions, they will be much appreciated.
Robert.
