was the what you hear box checked as well? this facility is useful but only
really for recording things like radio shows from the internet which you can
just record if you don't have software to do this anyway.

Thank you Baldev and Peter! I was able to go into the properties of the
volume and microphone wasn't set to display. So I checked it, and then was
able to mute it for playback in the way peter suggested. Thanks loads!
