I'm too scared to install any service packs because when I installed
service pack 1 ages ago it lost me all my Dialup networking. I called
Microsoft who said it was a known issue.

Can I install service pack 2 without installing service pack 1? Bear in
mind I've not even clicked on windows update since that last fiasco.

Sounds like you have not yet install XP Service Pack 2.
This contains an excellent Pop-up stopper as standard.
