Nothing is built as well as it once was in my opinion.

Hi Jackie,
my Perkins? It's now 42 years of
age and as good as new.

The Perkins is slightly different though - as it's mechanical. But yes, those machines were definitely built to last. Mine is nearly twenty years old and apart from a slight twisted backspace key - don't know what the real name for it is it still works fine. . I wonder if the newish ones that the RNIB are selling are as good?

Hi Mike et al

I agree that the Cobolt tape-measure isn't great quality, nor the 12-minute memo recorder now being sold by RNIB. And there are probably other examples like that if I sat and thought about them long enough. But, in the main, I
would say that most assistive technology equipment is pretty reliable and
built for purpose. I've had my PowerBraille display for eight years, for
instance, and it was second-hand when I got it. My metal Dymo gun has had years of use, yet still works well. And my Perkins? It's now 42 years of
age and as good as new.

I do agree that some of the gimmicky sounds and silly announcements on these
talking products patronise us, when a single audible beep to indicate the
thing is on or off would suffice.

James,

This is my point; all of the research and development.......
who do they ask when they prototype items?

It is the approach that VI people are somewhat clueless and need everything
explained, or notified with a fanfare when they are being presented with
information.... Such as Jackie mentioned about the microwave: door open,
door closed, well duh! or the fanfare when you are being told the time etc.

Regarding build quality, the talking tape- it is nearly impossible to remove
the battery at times and the belt clip is insuficient to hold the tape on
your belt. The weight of the tape with battery is too much and pulls the
tape off your belt, and if it falls there is a wire connected onto the PCB
which breaks off and you lose the speech.

Is there any help groups for rage against the machines?

Hi Steve,

Although i cannot speak to your being able to measure in
millimetres as i do not have a talking tape measure,, in
general, the cheap-feeling and poor quality builds - at
least in my experience do not warrant the cost that
Blindness-specific devices are sold at.

Hi Lynn,

You hit the nail on the head. Centimeters are fine, but
you can't measure to the nearest milimeter, as you can
with the talking variety.

All the best

I don't agree with you about the Braille tape measure not
being accurate
enough. Not sure what they are like in the UK but in
france, the braille
tape measures are very accurate because each centimeter
is represented by a
dot and lots of blind people round here use this one
rather than a tape
measure and I know quite a few blind handy people.

Steve & David,

I shall subscribe; as I am also into a bit of motor/ATC
restoration!

Perhaps state side is the place to source a lot of
equipment if possible?

Mike

Mike, just a thought, did you know that there was a
blind DIY type list?
Think it's called the blind handyman list. Might be on
the directory at
www.whitestick.co.uk

Hi,

Yes, I tried resetting it and cleaning the tape etc.

A Braille one is not accurate enough. I am building a
raised decking
platform, about 22 by 33 feet, on which a log cabin
style house shall be
placed upon.

For use with a compound chop saw, a Braille tape would
not be all that
accurate.

Thanks for suggestion though.

Regards,

Mike

Mike,

Why don't you go for the Braille tape measures? They
are far better and
same quality as a regular one and even look just like a
regular tape
measure except that it has dots on it.

I whole heartedly agree with Andy about blind-specific
items being too
ugly and of inferior quality as most of the mainstream
stuff. On top of
that, we pay a higher price for all that. I too buy as
much mainstream
equipment as possible, i'll just make sure that it is
perfectly usable
for me. However for specific things like a tape
measure for instance, I
got the Braille one.

Take care,

Lyn & Twinny
