Hi Dean.
Well, in that case, speak to BT and see what if anything they can do for
you. Since I live in a modern property built within the last couple of
years, I know exactly where I stand regarding the sockets as it was one of
the first things I asked BT when they activated our line. I had to check in
case I had problems with my broadband or home phone services which are
essential as I'm sure you'd agree.
All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi,
Ibrahim that's good advice. I've tried all this though and what I was
really wondering does the fact that I don't have a test socket on the
master box where the outside line is connected inside the house change any
of this? I still have one of the old boxes with one screw in the middle
and no ridge. I'm hoping I can just get someone to fix it but I'm not
sure if the age of it means no one will touch it and it is a BT job. I
believe it is just a problem with where the wire goes into the phone
socket itself and a new socket should do the trick, hopefully nothing to
do with the wire even close to the master socket.

Hi Eleanor and all.
OK, my understanding of the current BT policy is that they are responsible
for the line up to the master socket in your home. This is the socket
that's identified with a clearly tactile and visible stripe along the
centre of its width. If your using another line in your house, those are
probably wired extensions and are the property and/or responsibility of
the home owner or if your a tenant, your landlord. Firstly, try replacing
all chords and filters connected to all equipment to see if one of those
chords could be the problem. \You'll be amazed at how a faulty sky box or
phone chord can cause problems with the entire setup in your home. After
you've replaced all chords and filters and your still experiencing
problems, you need to test whatever is causing you problems with the
master socket in your home as described above. Unscrew the two screws
holding the removable panel in place and plug the equipment directly in to
the BT testing socket. If the equipment works then BT will charge to fix
any internal wiring or extension system you may have.
All the best, Ibrahim.

I know years ago when I needed my socket in the house replaced BT did it
at no extra charge but that was 10 years ago! I understand that the
socket in the house if installed by them in the first instance is then
their property. At first even 10 years ago, they were going to try
charging me one hundred pounds but fortunately I got someone who knew wht
they were talkin g about and I was not charged. If I had not got someone
who knew the rules then I'd have paid!

I got the impression that the internal wiring was my responsibility and
the line once it left the house was then BT's but I may be wrong. I
also was told that BT charge anyway for the repairs and they're not that
cheap. I was just going to get an engineer to put a new box on but I
wondered if they could just do this considering that the box where the
line meets the house isn't the new type. There are two sockets on the
filter, I'm sure one is for a router or modem but I have tried a
separate filter for the broadband anyway to be sure. There are rare
ocasions when the phone crackles without the broadband connected but the
worst of it seems to be triggered by the broadband being connected.

I'm probably not telling you something that you don't know, but if it
is a
problem with the box, then that would be the responsibility of whoever
you
rent your line from. However, if you call them out to sort it and it
turns
out to be something else, you'll be charged for it. It is a bit dodgy
that
it only happens when your broadband is plugged in.
The set up in your room doesn't sound like it is quite right with just
one
filter. I presume you have tried unplugging the cordless phone.

Hi,
I have changed my filters recently to make sure of this. This is how
I have it set up. I have an extension that plugs into the phone
socket to go to my computer upstairs. On the plug the plugs into the
socket is a socket for a phone so this has a filter plugged in and
then a phone. Upstairs I have a cordless phone and my modem plugged
into a filter which are then plugged into the extension. My modem is
plugged to the modem side but I have tried using a sepperate filter
for the modem just for luck, this didn't help.
