Hi.

OK, firstly this is not a bar code scanner like at the supermarket, it uses its own proprietary labelling system which requires special labels. The additional packs are so that you can have more items labelled in case you run out of the labels that come with the device. As far as I know, there is only one proper bar code scanning device on the market, but it uses a database of commercial codes which regularly has to be updated, it doesn't always work and costs over £1000. If you use the same coded label more than once, you'll replace whatever was recorded previously for that label. IE if you were using label 100 from pack A for a tin of soup, then bought another pack A and used label 100, the PenFriend would announce that the labelled item was soup as the codes are identical. However, packs A and B are individually coded, so label 100 from pack A and the same from pack B would not cross codes.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Dunno about you but this whole A pack B pack thing seems a bit daft.
Surely it could've been developed a little better?

What happens, in practice, if you use the same barcode label twice? That
would be useful to know.

Also, why can't we just use the barcode that is on the product itself
already? This would mean that every time I swipe a can of heinz baked
beans, it would always say heinz baked beans because the barcode will
always be the same. Or would this necessitate too much guesswork in
working out where the barcode is? I ask because some of these barcode
sensors are really very good and you don't have to be precise at where
you point the wand.

Isaac,

I was thinking the same thing. I am guessing that the penfriend is
pretty
portable and can therefore be lost pretty easily - I lose every other
thing!
Backup is going 6to be important.
really looking forward to getting a hold of one and playing with it
though.

Hi Karl

This is my understanding too. Another point is that The device is very
useful for many applications but I suspect using it for anything
critical
(meaning anything that it will take you too long to construct again) may
be
risky.
As all messages are stored on the device, any memory corruption (which
can
happen with this type of devices) may mean that all messages are lost.
So for example I would not mark my CDs unless the messages can be easily
backed up and restored.

Regards
Isaac

Hi,
What I meant was that if you are concerned that you would go through the
labels fast by using them for food: labels on tins and fridge/freezer
items,
and felt that you would run out of labels real fast there was a way of
using
more than one pack of label A packs. So, if I bought 5 packs of A
labels, I
could just go through them as long as I deleted the voice tag for each
tin/freezer bag I used. I didn't mean reusing the labels.

Cheers
Karl

No, but if you have them on a box in the freezer for example containing
sausages and then eat the sausages and replace them with steak, you can
rerecord the sausage label to become steak. I think this is what Karl
was
explaining.

If you are using labels for disposable goods, like tins and freezer
bags
you
can use pack a labels repeatedly if you simply scan the label you are
using
as you open the tin and then clear that label's voice tag on the pen.
Then, if you scan a new label and it comes up with a voice tag you
know
it
is still in use

You just have to be sure you clear the label everytime you use the
bag/tin
etc

Karl.

Barry,

I believe you will get varying sizes of label in each pack. A and b
refers
to the coding by which the Penfriend recognises the label itself.
for
that
reason you cannot purchase two packs of pack A as they will be of no
use
unless you have two penfriends.

at present there is no pack b, but if there were, you could only buy
one
of
those for one Penfriend. In the future we may get pack c d e and 5 6
and
7,
But I will have filled my freezer long before then.

David

Hi folks,

I've sortive followed this and sortive not...

I'm confused as to why we even have two different types of packs
unless
they
are just different sizes?

Can someone explain this, briefly in a nut shell if you will?

Thanks,
Barry.
