HI,

Thanks for your reply. Not to be mean but it?s great to find someone who
like me used to be an avid gamer when sight was better ? I only mean you
know the feeling of being left in the dark, if you?ll pardon the pain now
that the previous joys are inaccessible.

Your description of the MUD got me wanting to go, and I just know I?m going
to be missing out on a lot of work over the coming weeks, ?grin?. Not to
mention it?s not going to make the insomnia any better, but who cares?
?smile?.

Like yourself I first majored in Computing Science. I don?t know about you
but I find a lot of problems with software for the VI is that people don?t
think laterally enough, or ?out of the box? if you will and so everyone just
follows the same model so the flaws remain throughout. Given more time I?d
have loved to have delved into this area, get together with people more apt
at programming than myself and put my creative mind to some use.

Thanks again, and I?ll check out those links you provided. Expect a virtual
tap on your MUD shoulder sometime soon! Don?t worry, I?ll try not to beat
you too harshly my first time!

Hussein,

Like yourself I was once a sighted gamer.  My favs where Sim City, Sim
Copter, Theme park, Quake 1 and 2, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior Mario, Mortal
Kombat, Street Fighter, and Realms Of The Hunting.  The last one was a first
person 3d shooter and stratagey combo that came on 4 CD?s for the PC.  Very
addictive and fun!

Personally I?ve not been impressed with VI games as a whole.  There?s been a
few nice ones like GMA Tank Commander, and Lonewolf.  I?ve always found the
rest very basic in-terms of them being move based.  I?ve therefore turned my
hand to online text adventures such as MUDS.
MUDS are real time multi player text games.  My favorite one is Return Of
The Jedi.  You need a MUD client to play and I like VIP MUD from

www.gmagames.com

Return Of The Jedi has over 15000 rooms and you select what your characters
name, Guild and classes are going to be.

So for example my character Remshaw is a Bounty hunter, Assassin, Storm
trooper, Shock Trooper and Gun Slinger.  You train various stats such as Hit
points, (a bit like energy levels), Constatution, Dexterity, Strength,
weapon ability etc.

VIP MUD has ROTJMUD as one of the 5 or so pre-configured MUDs already preset
into the client.

I like it because you?re playing with other sighted and VI folks, the
actions typically fast especially in battles and if you are a geek you can
waste many?s an hour exploring the lands, taking part in quests and training
your character.

There are hundreds of other MUDs out there and if you do decide to give this
area of gaming ago you?ll probably want to start with one from the VIP MUD
preset list.

If you do decide to try ROTJMUD I?d be happy to meet your character and give
you a bit of a tour.

There are other just VIP games out there and one of the best resources has
got to be on Whitestick?s game page for online and offline games.
http://www.whitestick.co.uk/

you?ll see two links on the homepage there, for online and offline games.
It really depends what type of games you are interested in.  MUDDING is
quite time consuming but I?ve found very rewarding.  I can easily, (now that
I have experience with my favorite one), drop 3 hours of an evening just
playing it and chatting to other players.

I?ve just found allot of VI specific games lack in playability, storyline
and more common than is not sustainability.  GMA tank Commander is a classic
example of this.  Wonderful sounds, great playability but only 6 levels!
Show that to a sighted person with their Xbox 360, Playstation 3 etc and
they?d laugh at ya.  Users cant? create more levels no does it have an
online deathmatch mode.

Having a background in Computer science and therefore having developed other
types of software I can imagine that desigining VIP games mightened be the
easiest or quickest of ventures but it?s 2010 and I?m quite hard some might
say on VI Game Developers.  I just figure if I?m going to pay for a game I
do not want Fisher Price, often low-quality gaming experience.

Barry

Subject: [access-uk] PC and Online games for the VI?

Hi,

It's been forever since I've just been able to sit and enjoy it but when my
sight was better than it is now I was an avid gamer.  Flight Sim, the good
old SimCity Classic and of course the old favourites chess and reversi all
kept me entertained long into the insomnia-riddled nights.

I was wondering if anyone here could bring me up to speed with what's out
there for the blind and partially sighted in terms of accessible gaming.  I
remember when I used to play Grizzly Gulch in high school - I shudder now to
think I thought that was the creme de la creme of gaming.

Any tips much appreciated.  I seriously just need a good long chill out
after the last few rollercoaster months and it's days like today that make
me ask the above.
