Well the newer models have more memory so things are moving on as always.

The RNIB are selling some of these but they now say it is a
discontinued line. Guess the speech support on them is not as it
might have been. I like them but I am not in to editing etc, more
is the pity. I like them for recording lectures and even recording
from the Internet as I am not good at knowing how to do direct
recording when on the Internet. Very handy little recorders though
I have to say.

I have a DS40. The DS55 is one of the newer models with the
improved voice navigation and better quality recording isn't it? I
got quite a good deal on this and like the results I am getting
with recording but I didn't realise that actually the better
models, like the DS55, 65 and 75 aren't really that expensive in comparison.
won't let

Hello Dean,
Which model do you have? I have the Olympus DS-55 and I have deleted files
recorded on the unit through the USB connection to the PC with no
problems. I
don't use the DSS software and the recorder works just fine. If you
accidentally deleted the voice files they're easily found on the CD so it's
just a question of selecting the right language and copying them back to the
recorder.
Best wishes,
