[access-uk] Re: Off Topic: In Touch

Scott, I listen to it, though granted not every single week, but I find it difficult to like the way it is presented. Personally it lacks vibrancy and appeal to all ages of visual impairment. I'd like to see the programme be 30 minutes in length, once a week, but with a variety of topics up for discussion. There should be more user input, more reviews of all kinds of daily living appliances and high or low tech, and the usual mix of political issues and healthcare discussions. Oh but let's see something a bit more lively and less kind of old school and patronising.

Anyway, this discussion is going on over on the UK Radio list. Following my original post to this list about having difficulty contacting the show about my recent experience in hospital, I wanted to report the update that I had been successful. With that done, I'm satisfied that I achieved what I set out to do, so maybe that's it on this list eh? (smile).

Totally agree Jackie!
Not even worth a listen in its current format,

In Touch, in its current guise, needs scrapping. It needs bringing into the 21st century with more opportunity to discuss issues by those for which it is intended. We need to get rid of this older approach with just two or three minutes dedicated to technology reviews which are always done by the same person or persons. It needs revamping completely. Sorry for being so blunt but I've felt that for a long long time, and why sport always takes precedence for me on a Tuesday night. Same old same old same old patronising tripe!!

The other thing is that actually the topic which took up the majority of time did kind of link in, but of course they didn't see that.

Well Terry, at least she did get air time, but I'm not an uncritical
fan of In Touch. They could have tried to find out how it is that
Grampion have seemingly got it so right, compared say, to their
presenter's experience of a hospitalstay. I note too it is one area
that's mentioned in the National Federations pitch in Soundings this
month. (Now please, let's not get onto the Fed, but we have to face
it that there is a lot of concern about the sheer ineptitude and
crassness that is some health authority's approach to VI people
staying in hospital.

Wonder why this isn't on Vi-gen?

Cheers,

Trouble is, as usual with in touch these days, they didn't give the
piece long enough.
For many Visually Impaired people who find the prospect of being in
hospital a frightening and disorientating process I think if we had
heard Jackie talk more about her experience it would have made people
potentialy feel more comfortable and also put people in a position
where tey could ask Health Authorities for facilities like for example
a single room.

Congrats Jackie on your In Touch appearance just now. You came across
as warm, but not gushing over the very good treatment and attention
you - and Ian - got during your hospital stay.

I'd say go ahead and send a recording to the Grampion Health
Authority, and maybe a letter pointing them to the In Touch site where
there will be a summary soon.

A heartening tale too maybe for some local audio mags, what with all
the bad news we have to report.

Cheers,
