[access-uk] Re: Norton auto email scanning

Well done, George. I don't think it can be mentioned enough that people need
to protect their computer with up-to-date protection. I have a virus checker,
two add/pop-up blockers, a firewall and Windows up-date. All of these are free
on the net and all of them I have set to check for daily up-dates. It was
fairly simple to download and set up these programmes and now they run in the
background. A couple of years ago, my computer caught a virus from what I
thought was a very trustworthy source and I lost a year and a halfs university
work. I had some protection but I hadn't up-dated it for a month or so. I
learned a valuable lesson.

  Hi Phil,
There are worms and viruses about which spoof mail
  addresses.

Basically the problem is that some completely
reckless idiot, who does not have adequate and up
to date virus protection, has your details in his
or her address book. Those details have been
harvested by one of these worms, and has used
their system to send out messages appearing to
come from you and others in their address book.

I get similar messages too from purporting to come
from people whom I know take great care to ensure
their systems are fully protected. However, when
you look closely at the Header information, and
track down the owner of the IP address, it just
proves that they didn't send the message.

There is absolutely no excuse these days for not
having virus protection. There are numerous
totally free anti-virus programs available today,
and by far the majority do an excellent job.
Keeping these definitions up to date is not
  usually too difficult either.

Frankly, I am still more than surprised at the
number of highly intelligent people I meet who
claim to have virus protection, yet it has either
expired, or the virus definitions have not been
updated for a very long time. These days, it pays
to check for new definitions on an almost daily
  basis.

Another area, which I know can be troublesome, are
the Critical Updates. With a minimal amount of
help setting up it initially, these can be applied
automatically, and do without doubt plug many
  holes.

I am well aware that some of this software can be
intimidating, but that's one of the areas where
everyone on this list can help each other. All
anyone has to do is ask.

  George.

Have done this, it too says I'm clean. Anyone got
any others that they use that are good at spotting
stuff others like Norton perhaps doesn't.

a bit concerned as the friend who says they got an
email from my wife and I's accounts we've not
actually sent an email to for the past few weeks.

  Oh well, will keep searching....!
