Colin and all,

The PDF is here:

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_touch_iOS4_User_Guide.pdf

I thought Jim couldn't manage the .PDF so sent him my converted text file. Let me know if you need this and I'll send it to you directly on request, since it's only small; but otherwise it's best easily obtainable from the Apple site (direct URL given above).

Hope that helps.

It would be very useful if Carole could post it somewhere
or a link to it so that people that may be changing to
the Iphone or considering it in the future have use of
this too.

Jim,

It was in the Ipod Manual. I think Jackie put me on to
it.
I have a text copy and thought I'd sent you one, but
maybe not.
Could send off line if it helps.

Hi Carol,

Can you tell me where you read the instructions for
deleting multiple mail messages, I asked about this
before on this list and got no replies, so if it was a
text message and you kept it, could you forward it onto
me, or let me know where you read the instructions.
thanks. Jim

Hi Jackie,

Yes, it's much better to keep your finger on the screen
till you find the icon you want, if you think you're
anywhere near it anyway.
I am beginning to get to grips with writing on the
onboard keyboard, but it's still rather tedious. I
haven't really mastered how to tell for definite what
I've just deleted, if I get incorrect letters or just
want to delete an extra space after a word, for
example. I've also read about deleting multiple mail
messages at once but haven't managed to really understand/find out
how to do this in practice.
Anyway, like you I'm getting there, even if I do tend to
have to use keyboard and ipod, not to mention BN, to get
the best working arrangement at times.

Think I'll wait till the next generation of phones comes
out, unless I get an offer like yours of course! <Smiles>
Anyway, bashing on and enjoying. At least I'm beginning
to be able to find and play individual songs with
inputting on the screen now.

Hi Carol

Just things like keeping my finger on the screen and
sliding it across so that the icons are read out as I
go, rather than me lifting my finger and dabbing at
them, which is what I had a tendency to do. And he
showed me how to get rid of unwanted messages which I
do in some way or other. He also took a picture of
Martin and I together and placed this on both my iPod
Touch and iPhone so you can see it when you unlock the
screen. It's just a personal touch that I wanted to
have on my devices.
I'm now beginning to get used to texting. It's a long
way round for a shortcut if you ask me, but I'm
determined, so that helps! (smiles).

Ian has also been playing with the Mac while here, and
likes it better than Windows in some respects. He
prefers the graphics, and loves the keyboard, not to
mention its size. He also thought VoiceOver was a vast
improvement to Eloquence for listening to which I found
rather interesting.

Hi Carol

My son being here this weekend has helped a bit too. He has worked out what VoiceOver does, and shown me a
couple of things that have been helpful. Still not a
convert to the actual phone, but getting there and as
determined as ever.

Yes, I'm determined now to master it, having got going

I agree, you don't want to rely solely on the
keyboard.

Hi Barry

Yes, I'm trying hard to use the screen with my
fingers as it's more realistic than having to get
the keyboard out every time. It's a life-saver for
certain things, but I'm determined to master it, and
would encourage anyone else to do likewise.

Hi Jackie,

I'd say it took at least 2 weeks of using the
on-screen keyboard before I started to feel
reasonably comfortable.
Allot of frustration! I've now got the Wireless
keyboard and of course it's wonderful. I'm very glad
though that I spent several months with the on-screen
keyboard and controls though first!

Barry.

Hi Ed

Getting there, painfully slowly. I dread the phone
ringing or a text coming in, but I'm beginning to
get round it without the keyboard and using my fingers.
I guess everyone has gone through this to get to where
they are in using an iPhone competently. I've got
my son coming over tonight for a long weekend, and I'm
going to get him to turn VoiceOver on on his iPhone,
then we can have a proper dual!! (smile).

Hi Jackie,

Sticking 2 fingers up will continuously read a book
to you in iBooks. Actually it won't, but flicking
upwards with 2 fingers will and I couldn't resist the joke.

Thanks Ed, very helpful and stuff worth saving for
future reference. I'm kind of getting there, but
it's rather a case of sticking two fingers up at the
moment than gesturing with the phone itself. I've been
practising the gestures within VoiceOver, and they
seem to work, but what a faff to answer a call or
delete something. And as for forwarding a joke,
well let's just say my friends will have to wait a bit
longer for them!! (smile).

Hi Jackie,

Apologies if someone has answered your questions
already, but I haven't seen a reply.

To delete a contact, open it, and double tap on
edit. Then flick with three
fingers to the right. Your iPhone should say
something like "rows 3 to 8 of 8". The delete
contact option should have appeared after "add field". If
for some reason flicking with three fingers to the right
doesn't work initially, flick with one finger until
you're a little further down the list of fields
already visible.

You'll see that you already have some options to
delete different numbers without doing the
3-fingered flick, but this will leave you with a blank contact
unless you use the delete contact option.

There are a couple of ways to answer calls. You can
either do a 2- fingered double tap which is the
quickest if you are comfortable with the gesture.
If not though, then you can use the standard flick
right or left with one finger gestures to navigate
the screen. You will see a "slide to answer"
option. Double tapping on this (with one finger)
will also answer the call.
This sounds longer but, as I say, you may find
you're able to accomplish it quickly enough if the
2-fingered double tap is giving you problems.

I'm afraid I don't know how to turn the voicemail
off on o2. Could it be somewhere in the message
settings when you ring the 901 number? Alternatively, are you
able to change either there or on the phone itself
how long it takes for the voicemail to kick in? You
could always lengthen this interval if so.

Hope this helps.

Ed

Well, all the contacts are in now, but I have a few
questions please?

1. How do I remove an unwanted contact?

2. What does one do to delete read or unwanted
messages to be discarded?

3. I'm still having finger gesture problems, so
don't always manage to answer the phone until Voicemail
kicks in. As I'm on O2, what is the number to turn
Voicemail off. I know it is 901 to dial it.

Getting there, but finding it a bit frustrating at
times. For example, I don't like the way a text
message alert will sound when you are talking to
someone on the phone, and VoiceOver reads out the
text message you have just received. Is there a way of
stopping it?

Thanks for your help as ever.
