Now the handsfree thing I can help with.
Basically if you move the phone away from your ear it automatically goes
into handsfree mode.
This apparently is a feature and certainly if you know about it is fine but
if you don't can be a tad annoying.
I use touch typing mode on the screen and find it OK I intentionally didn't
get the keyboard for around a month as I was determined to become efficient
at screen typing: don't think I've got there yet but certainly am far faster
thanI was a few weeks ago.
I love everything about the IPhone apart from the phone, for me this is the
weekest component of the product.

Carol, stick with your iPod Touch for now my girl! (smile). It's not as
easy as it sounds, and I keep cheating with the keyboard which isn't really
helping me in the long run.
I like it, and I'm determined to persevere, but it's very different from
Nokia handsets, and there are one or two things that irritate me. Firstly,
if you are speaking to someone on the phone and a text message comes in, you
get your jingle, then VoiceOver reading out the message. Now if someone is
having a conversation with you, they can't hear that, but you can, and it's
bloody annoying.
It also tends to jump into speaker or hands free mode during my
conversations, and I'm not sure why it does that.
I'm sure I'll get to like it, but I'm not a wild convert at the moment,
though think it was the right thing to do regarding O2.

I didn't see your question about voice mail, but if you need to switch on
and off in O2, 1750 switches on and 1760 switches off, I think.
I haven't used them myself for ages but did write them down so give them a
try.

more keen as I realise I could probably manage the phone too if I wanted.

Apologies if someone has answered your questions already, but I
haven't seen a reply.
To delete a contact, open it, and double tap on edit.
Then flick with three fingers to the right. Your iPhone should say
something like "rows 3 to 8 of 8". The delete contact option should
have appeared after "add field".
If for some reason flicking with three fingers to the right doesn't
work initially, flick with one finger until you're a little further
down the list of fields already visible.
You'll see that you already have some options to delete different
numbers without doing the 3-fingered flick, but this will leave you
with a blank contact unless you use the delete contact option.
There are a couple of ways to answer calls. You can either do a
2-fingered double tap which is the quickest if you are comfortable
with the gesture. If not though, then you can use the standard flick
right or left with one finger gestures to navigate the screen. You
will see a "slide to answer" option. Double tapping on this (with one
finger) will also answer the call. This sounds longer but, as I say,
you may find you're able to accomplish it quickly enough if the
2-fingered double tap is giving you problems.
I'm afraid I don't know how to turn the voicemail off on o2. Could it
be somewhere in the message settings when you ring the 901 number?
Alternatively, are you able to change either there or on the phone
itself how long it takes for the voicemail to kick in? You could
always lengthen this interval if so.

Well, all the contacts are in now, but I have a few questions please?
1. How do I remove an unwanted contact?
2. What does one do to delete read or unwanted messages to be
discarded?
3. I'm still having finger gesture problems, so don't always manage
to answer the phone until Voicemail kicks in. As I'm on O2, what is
the number to turn Voicemail off. I know it is 901 to dial it.
Getting there, but finding it a bit frustrating at times.
For example, I don't like the way a text message alert will sound when
you are talking to someone on the phone, and VoiceOver reads out the
text message you have just received. Is there a way of stopping it?
