I was surprised too to learn this, but you can not use the card without the can that you have to purches. I also wondered why you couldn't use the card and what the card slot is actually for. Also please note that the box that doesn't need a can for £89 does not support audio description, or at least that's what I was told.

Subject: [access-uk] Netgem AD free view query.

Hi all,

I purchased a netgem free view box in December 2004. There's a card slot on
the side which I assumed was for when I wanted to use a top up card to gain
more channels. However, when I phoned netgem to order a top up card today I
was told I would have to purchase a device that slots into the card slot
then the card slots into that device. The device is £39.99, the registration
is £20.00. and the top up card is ££7.99 per month. ~They say I can purchase
another netgem box at £89.00 which doesn't need the device, so who's got
ripped off here? Does anyone know whether I can use the card slot in the
side of the netgem box with a top up card without the need of the device
that has to (according to netgem) accompany the top up card? Why is the card
slot there if one cannot use it? I hope others on this list who are thinking
of getting the netgem free view AD box reads this message first.

Regards.
Jim.
