HI.

SSD, flash memory, whatever you want to call it, it is basically the same.
Where as Sata is usually a term coined for physical hard drives in the netbook
context, SSD or solid state is referring to those machines with flash memory as
the hard drive.

Not quite sure what you mean Steve? The Asus 901 has a 12Gb solid state
drive and as far as I know, such SSD technologies are otherwise known as Flash
memory. Certainly the following Wikipedia articles seem to bear this out:

  Hi Leonie,

Not true. The Asus range come with flash memory, not a solid state hard
drive as we know it. That's why the storage capacity is so small. The upside
is that in theory they should boot quicker.

  All the best

  Steve

As far as I know, all netbooks come with a hard drive. It's just that
some are smaller than others. The Asus 901 comes with either Win XP Home or
Linux. I have the Win XP version, which has a C:\ drive for storing all the
Windows files, plus a D:\ drive where I install all my programmes and personal
files. Pretty much the same setup as my desktop.

The 901 has a 12Gb hard drive, with an additional 20Gb online storage
available, which is great for backing up your data. It can also read SD cards
of all sizes. For instance, I have a couple of 8Gb sd cards and a 16Gb USB
stick that I carry around for various purposes.

  Hi Steve -

I've lost access to my desk top machine, and the saved messages, so was going
from memory and clearly getting mixed up with what you said you prefered in the
netbook range.

What I am looking for is something with more than 4 hours battery life, and
that has wireless and Bluetooth capabilities. It doesn't have to have a hard
drive, but would need to be able to take a 16 SDHC mem card. Incidentally, for
netbooks that don't come with hard drives, where does installed software
reside? I've never had a machine without an HD! -

    Hi Andy,

You haven't been reading my messages <Smile> I don't like the Asus range,
not enough storage. I prefer the MSI Wind, even over the Samsung Netbook. it
has a nicer keyboard, and the right shift is in the right place, an annoyance
to me with the Samsung. The other thing about the Samsung is that you have to
press the FN key with the shift key if you want a colon, otherwise you seem to
get a dash. 'orrible machine.

    Sorry Jackie, I don't like it <Smile>.

    All the best

    Steve
