I just selected UK layout, and the colon works fine, shift+semicolon

only one thing I can suggest.  When I set mine up using the getting started 
wizard, I selected UK extended.  I don't know why I did, but I was playing 
on a hunch that the differences in keyboard layout on this machine might 
have something to do with it.  If possible, find and select UK extended 
layout and your problems should be solved.
