You cannot just use one lead unless it is an HDMI connection at both ends,
sounds like your VGA and audio lead will have to do.

Subject: [access-uk] Netbook and TV hook up
Hi
I want to hook my netbook up to my TV which has PC input. In the past to
do
something like this I have used the cable with the screws on the ends
(sorry
can't remember name) and an audio lead. Is there any way to use one
connector to work for both audio and display?
Hope I am making sense here!
