Hi Frank,

To be fair though, yours was not after all, an NTL problem.  it was a break 
in your cable, and that's why the router couldn't see the outside 
world.  So being Devil's advocate, if you are using a router, and not going 
straight through NTL's equipment, why should they support you?  The problem 
comes in that you didn't know it was not an NTL problem, until your outside 
firm came in.

I am not defending NTL here, just pointing out that support people can't be 
expected to support unusual situations, like routers, especially as there 
are hundreds of different makes and models of router on the market, and 
they are all different.
