Hi Eleanor

I don't think it works because the pin configuration is different, but I haven't seen one to find out. Nevertheless, they have dispensed with serial now, and an USB to parallel is a no-go with JAWS 11.

Indeed Jackie agree wholeheartedly with what you say but what about this adaptor thing I am talking about, would it not do the job where you plug in the seriel part and then the USB to the PC. It is not a cable now mind. I recall discussing something like this this morning perhaps on another list, not sure and Ibrahim also mentioning the same adaptor. Will have to look out e-mails. I had my powerbraille with WordPerfect 5.1 and Keynote Gold.

Hi Eleanor

I bought my PowerBraille some years back secondhand. I appreciate
that things change, more sophisticated technology appears on the
market, and you move on from operating system to operating system or
version to version of a product. And perhaps FS decided to remove
serial support within JAWS 11 for reasons we aren't privy to.
Nevertheless, I am using Windows 7, need to run JAWS 11, and want my PowerBraille to remain active.
It can't be done, they aren't interested in little me or the minority
who use such displays, so therein lies my choice. I can't afford six
grand for a new Focus just because it supports USB only, and there
isn't anything wrong with my PowerBraille apart from old age, and I
know how that feels anyway, (big smile).

It's all about what suits the individual at the end of the day. I
have my reasons and bear no disrespect to anybody. I just have to do
what suits me and my budget.

Indeed Jackie. I think my PowerBraille cost eight thousand, yes eight
thousand pounds!!!!

Hi Eleanor

Freedom Scientific have removed serial support from JAWS version 11.
Up until then, I was able to do just as you describe by using an USB
to serial converter on a Netbook or laptop. Unfortunately, FS have
failed to deal with this problem in JAWS 11. They advise you to
purchase an USB to parallel converter, but it doesn't work. And,
without going into complications, their attempt at trying to give me
a work-around screwed up previous versions of JAWS I need to run on
my machine.

So, in essence, USB to serial conversion works prior to JAWS 11 on a
display such as PowerBraille, but not any more, and that's my big
problem really. I like my PowerBraille display, it still functions
well, and I'm not going to change it unless I either have the money,
or choose to of my own doing.

Hi Jackie
I appreciate I may be wrong, but did I not understand you to say some
time back that a USB parallel cable would work with Power Braille and
Jaws 10?
For those interested Power Braille and Focus blue work with Supernova
also.

Hi Pele

One of the things dearest to my heart, as many know, is Braille.
And because of the route FS have elected to take regarding the
digital signing of drivers - rightly or wrongly depending on your
point of view - I can no longer use my own PowerBraille display if
I want to work with JAWS 11.
Having just purchased a Windows 7 laptop, I obviously need to run
JAWS 11, and there is no way around the display issue because I am
not prepared, and certainly can't afford, to purchase something that
suits FS. I know from what I've seen and heard that Window-Eyes
supports Braille very well, and this is just one of many incentives
for me to move over. I don't think I'll ever uninstall JAWS from my
PC because it is something I will use having forked out for it. But
I'm prepared to give Window-Eyes a good try, particularly with
Braille in mind. As soon as I downloaded the demo and chose a
PowerBraille display, it went first go.

Time will tell.

Hi Jackie and Everyone

I am also someone who has gone over completely to Window-Eyes. I
used JAWS when I was at work as it had better support for MS Office
at that time but, as my husband preferred Window-Eyes, always used it at home.
Now I am no longer at work I find Window-Eyes works well with the
programs I run.

I have a few issues with Windows 7, but I think they are related to
the operating system rather than the screen reader.

Good luck, Jackie.

Pele
