No, I am afraid not you have to touch the label with the pen friend
in order to know what item it is. This is the only way the pen
friend recognizes the lable.

is there a review mode in the product, whereby one can "read" what
they have recorded as int he voila?
i.e. is there a way one can view what is in the freezer for example,
when away from the freezer itself, and then they can find the food

I thought I'd mention too that the lables for the penfriend are so
cheap and affordable that you can easily dispose of them should you
really have to throw packaging etc. We will be offering 2 extra
packages
of lables and more packages will follow in the coming months.
