I've no monitor connected to the two desktops here.

You need a video card installed but nto a monitor plugge dinto it.

This is probably a stupid question, so please don't think me a dunce for 
asking! I just want to confirm I am right before I do anything.

Am I correct in thinking that you can't run a desktop PC with a set of speakers 
only and no monitor connected?
