[access-uk] Re: Media Edition Again

Steve,

I thought Gateway had closed in N Ireland. Don't tell me they've opened up somewhere over here. <GRRRR>

Their machines were second to none when I had one about ten years ago but, oh, their technical support (or lack of it) and rudeness were something else for sure. I will be interested if you pursue this one to know just what you find with Gateway these days.

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for that, I was acting on a recommendation of a friend but haven't
actually looked at all the specs on the site. I'll take another look but I
saw a very nice Gateway system today. Has anyone on the list had any
experience of Gateway?

This one was about ?570 for a dual core 2.8 processors, 1 gig of RAM and a
250 gig HD with 128 ATI Radion graphics card.

Best regards.

Steve

Steve - just had a look at the Dell machine you mentioned in the discussion with Brian and noticed that although in the comparative table for the three flavours of the dimension 5150 all say XP home when you go in to the full spec for any of the machines it actually specifies XP media center edition as the supplied operating system. A: have you clarified which OS is supplied? B: if not look out for this apparent difference if you have specific requirements especially if you are running a standard screenreader as I think there has been some mention of media centre requireing a screenreader that supports pro operating systems.

Hi Andy,

Well, it's a little trial and error. Initially I'll try the soundcard
in the pc to see what it's like but I anticipate having to get a
different sound card. I understand that the EMU cards are very good for
audio reproduction so may go for one of their pro type cards. I've a
prettey expensive hi-fi system so it's imperitive that the quality be
good. My amp on it's own is two and half grand! smiles.

I've taken on though what Brian said about the need for media centre. I
had wondered quite a bit about whether i really needed it. I think the
nebula card route would be the best option. I would be over the moon if
they had a version for Sky but, alas, haha, not so yet!

I also want to go for the HD TV option in the near future.

Best regards for now.

Steve

Hi Steve.

I'm a bit like yourself at the moment. I'm needing to upgrade my
computer and my hi-fi and I was keen on having a go at the Media Centre
version, possibly on a dell, because of the low noise. I have listened
to a number of demonstrations from America where they are able to
connect their satellite televisions. Unfortunately, we are unable here
yet to do the same, other than go down the Nebula route. unfortunately
, the Nebula system only works with Freeview and as we don't have
Freeview in our area yet, I'm scupper. I have all of my music
collection on my computer and have tried both a line-out and Veronica
method of connection, but unfortunately, both have a price in terms of
loss of quality, so I'm scupper again. To complicate the issue, I also
wish to upgrade to HDTV and plug the lot together. I've got some cash
coming soon, so I'm able to do it but the technology is simply not here
yet. How frustrating eh? Can you tell me how you plan to link your
computer to your hi-fi, and how you plan to get the maximum quality of
sound?

Best wishes.

Andy.

Hi All,

I know there has been some discussion on this in the past but I'm now
about to buy a new desktop. I want to integrate it with my home audio

system and connect it to a new HD TV.

OK, my questions, I'm using jaws 5 at the moment but am about to go to

jaws
7 pro, would I gain any benefit from going for media edition? If I
do, is there a particular version to either stipulate, or avoid? What

features in media centre would I not be able to utilise?

Lastly, anyone got any suggestions on a reasonably priced PC?

Steve
