My own feeling about this is you want to cover the maximum number of people as cheaply as possible. so, I think an MP3 download from a web site for those people who are planning a visit to put on their own portable device would be a good place to start. After all most people plan out these kinds of visits before they go don't they.

As a back up I'd suggest a few cheap MP3 players with the audio information pre-recorded to be made available on site. The players would need to be simple to use, with the ability to pause and rewind.

I wouldn't go for something like a play-away because I don't know if its possible to easily re-record the information. I don't know if this sensory garden will change, even slightly, but if it does the people responsible will want to alter the recorded info.
Hope that helps
Yusuf

How about using a Penfriend?
Some museums and galleries are starting to use the Penfirend in this sort of way. It could be used as a basic MP3 player or alternatively, the labels could be used as long as there was an easy way to identify where the labels were to use the Penfriend with them.

Inclusive design means that all products, services, environments etc., should be accessible and usable by the majority of people, to the greatest extent, without the need for any adaptation or specialist design.

Darran, The problem is that some may not have their own player - or not with them at any rate.

Richard, what about a downloadable MP3 file that people could pop onto their device of choice? Folks could then use their own phones, players etc.

May be tricky of course if the group don't have a website to host the file.

Hi, I've been asked by a group which has constructed a sensory garden, what would be the best way of providing audio info to visitors.

One suggested route was the construction of "audio posts", but I'm sure this would be far too expensive.

I wondered if anyone else had suggestions as to the best type of player?

I know that some libraries use "Playaways" which seem to be small MP3 players which have a pre-recorded book on them, and which contain some navigation features similar to DAISY. I presume these are pretty cheap, but would welcome more info.

   Would also welcome other suggestions.
