James -
Are you saying that if GDBA become aware that I used a long cane at times,
they might say that I therefore have no need for a guide dog?
That would very much depend on the amount of cane usage, and for how long
you left the dog alone whilst out with your cane. I don't think they would
object to the principle, it's a question of proportion. I still think you
should go through your circumstances and issues in full with GDBA, they
might be able to suggest some strategies for you. If nothing else, going
through everything in detail might help to prove to them that you have been
mismatched, if that is indeed the case.
My situation
is that the work I do with clients interests/disturbs the dog, and in
turn, that disturbs the client. I have looked at leaving the dog in
another room when with clients, but he then barks - I don't feel he has
been properly matched for me, but can't afford to let him go and wait for
another replacement, I was on the replacement list 12 months as it was,
waiting for him! It just feels like I need a second means of mobility for
certain circumstances, and I don't feel a guide cane offers enough basic
safety!
But then if you feel you have been mismatched, surely it's better to be
honest and raise the issue now, rather than at best having eight or nine
years of half-cane, Half-Gd mobility, or at worst facing the prospect of
things deteriorating if you start using your dog considerably less than you
do now. If the dog's social behaviour is not up to it, you need to tell
GDBA.
Anyway perhaps we had better continue this conversation off-list. Contact
me privately if you want, or start a thread on uk-guide-dogs.
Thanks
James
