Very interesting, Clive - some similarities to my own experience but a few
differences. in my
case there is no error message, the normal desktop is displayed (so I am told!)
but it will not
respond to keypresses, mouse or anything!

I would not like to give the impression that Toshiba laptops are unreliable.
This one ran
smootthly for over 2 and a half years, and until this last week my only problem
was a failure
to boot at all on one occasion - solved by removing the battery pack and
re-inserting it!
