Martin, You've been really patient thank you, I've actually got it working
now, I was having a real problem getting in to the properties page for the
network on the Laptop, and only managed it by firstly turning off security
in the router[thanks DJ for that suggestion] because I then got a message
saying that the laptop couldn't connect to the network, and did I want to
try and diagnose the problem, when I clicked on that button, a repair button
came up, and clicking on that brought up the properties page from where I
was also able to turn off security on the Laptop, and with no security
settings, the laptop connected to the network, and I could get online too!
[large sigh of relief!]

I then set up security in the router again, this time using WPA, then went
back to the network properties page on the laptop, and could set up WPA
security there too! I had to play with these settings a bit because it had
check boxes for TKIP and AES, and I didn't know what these settings meant,
but eventually it all worked out, and I'm delighted!

Many thanks again for all the help and suggestions, sorry it took so long -

Andy

| You need to tackle this through an elimination process. Let's start again.
| Fire up your laptop and connect via wireless. Open a command prompt and
| type in ipconfig /all. Note what the ip address is, if it is in the router
| range then this is not the problem. If it isn't then change it to a static
| ip using the info I've sent already. If it now works then this is the
| problem. To change back to dynamic ip addressing so you can use your
| laptop on other networks you would then need to investigate the routers
| wireless settings as this may be due to it not having dhcp enabled, but
| try the static change first.
|
| As the laptop works when hard-wired this is probably that dhcp is enabled
| for the router ports but not wireless.
|
| Don't know re the heat of your router.
|
| You might want to continue this off list so as not to bombard it with all
| this. Contact me on dudleym@xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| I've got company coming this weekend and will be going off-line pretty
soon
| so won't be able to pick this up again until late Sunday/Monday
