Hi Graham

It's fair to say that all the networks are clueless when it comes to TALKS. Having done the rounds with them all just to see what they know about TALKS, it turns out to be very little.

Vodafone will often put TALKS onto a mobile phone for you, but this facility is inconsistent. Some stores tell customers they can't put it on certain phones when, in fact, they are suitable devices. Other stores, like mine, will send the phone away and put TALKS on it free of charge, provided you buy the phone from them, and provided you don't mind having a standard and usually older version put on it.

As for the rest, none of them I have spoken to know what they are talking about. They think TALKS is voice-activated from the handset itself, or that they don't have the licence to put it on a phone for the customer.

Other disability services like Braille bills, Directory Enquiries, and general support with settings and the like is also very hit and miss.

When I first started using a mobile long before TALKS came out and changed my life completely, I began my journey with Vodafone. About a year ago, however, I tried the O2 Pay-As-You-Go service because they were offering 300 free texts for a tenner per month. But I didn't like not being able to have Email on my phone on the top-up service, so swapped my SIM card back and took up with Vodafone again, where I've never looked back.

As you say Graham, it's a bit more than getting a cheap deeal that you need to think about, which is the same with broadband too. What kind of fascinates me about this whole mobile phone business with TALKS is how it varies so much from one shop to another, and from one network to another.

All good fun!

Jackie

Hi Peter and all.

While I think the Money Saving Expert site is a useful place to look, it tends to focus on purely what is the cheapest I think and it does not always pay enough attention to quality of service in my opinion.

Tiscali, at the moment, is going through a period of relatively poor customer satisfaction, but it is one of the most competetively priced and so it gets a full thumbs up from Money Savings Expert.

A year or so ago, O2 had some particularly competetive deals and I went for O2 because of this. I think O2 coverage is good in fact, better than Vodaphone in London. Vodaphone does seem to get good results throughout the country however. I would agree that as an O2 online customer it is difficult to keep up with info about minutes without talking to someone about it and from what people say the customer service does seem better with O2.

I have recently been with T-Mobile and I would not touch this company. There is a disability helpline you can register with so whenever you call t-mobile you get through to staff on this line. Unfortunately, though the phone gets answered quickly, the I changed to O2 a year ago because staff knew nothing about talks though they had vaguely heard that a program with speech facilities could be installed on some symbian phones. Staff argued consistently that this would invalidate the warrantee of the phone. This seems to be absolute garbage from what I can find out. You should get better coverage from Vodaphone too though the deals may not look as competetive.

If I were choosing from scratch now I think I would look at Vodaphone and O2 with O2 offering more competetive deals but Vodaphone offering better service.

regards

Graham

Hi Carol

I'm sure you'll get a lot of input from users on this one. I can only speak for the Pay-As-You-Talk setup I have with Vodafone, which suits me well. I used to be with O2, but don't find their Customer Services team particularly obliging, and certainly not the store in our area. Vodafone, on the other hand, have always been helpful, even if they do claim to know a lot more about TALKS than is actually the case. (smile).

I do know from my son's use of O2 that they charge from £25 per month for a SIM-only contract which you can opt out of after giving 30 days notice. But you may recall that young Ian didn't like this because he found it difficult to monitor the amount of texts and airtime he was using without speaking to them directly instead of calling an automated service.

If you shop around, do one operator at a time because if you go from one to another, they will completely throw you it's that much of a minefield. It's a case of swings and roundabouts I'm afraid. What one offers you as a good deal, another will try to better it and maybe leave out something you liked from the first network.

Oh happy hunting (smiles).

Jackie

Hi all,
I'm not very happy with Orange right now and won't bore everyone with the details... I'm wondering whether to return to 02 with which I was happy for some years and only moved because we got a better deal for two of us. I'm only looking for a low use tariff, with some occasional texts. Does everyone charge for their printed bills these days and does 02 still keep tracks on your usage and let you know of the best possible tariff for you?

Any comments from anyone who has recently looked at what's going would be most welcome.

Thanks.
