[access-uk] Re: Iris Scanner Pen

This is certainly interesting but I wonder how fast and accurately a
totally blind person (with average or poor straight line concepts) will
be able to scan. I wonder if I'd miss lines or words as I try to locate
a second line.

If anyone tries this out, please give a report back. It's an exciting
breakthrough.

The IRIS Pen II - Executive (manufactured by I.R.I.S.,

Inc.)
is a pen sized scanner that allows you to scan data
directly
into any Windows or Mac application. The
text-to-speech
feature is an amazing learning and editing tool: hear
the
words spoken to you as you read them!
Since the IRISPen II is connected to your computer and

uses
its processor, you get real, editable text, right at
the
cursor position, much faster and more accurately than
all
                  other scanners.
Professionals, students, and others who need to scan
text
from
printed material will applaud the IRISPen II's ability
to
scan
text -- a line at a time -- directly into almost any
program
for later editing. Notebook-toting business travelers,

too,
may find IRIS's small, lightweight and accurate OCR
scanner
                  very handy.
If you have scanning to do at a library or other
location
and
you can't bring a laptop, just photocopy the pages you

need
and scan them in when you can. With the ability to
scan
1,000
characters per second, the IRISPen is much faster than
portable scanners, even when factoring in the time to
                  photocopy.
Smaller than the average TV remote control, the
IRISPen,
which
attaches to your USB port, is a snap to set up -- as
is
the
accompanying software, which you can configure for
right-
or
left-hand scanning. The pen has a button that can be
programmed to act as two keyboard commands (for
example,
one
click for a tab and two clicks for a return).
The IRISPen II - Executive edition is the Rolls
Royce of
pen scanners and a top seller. Here are a few of
the
unique features that make it stand out:
Text-to-Speech Module - Scan a line of text
and
your
computer will read the sentence back to you in
one
of
10 languages! Text-to-speech can be very
helpful
for
                          people with learning disabilities like
dyslexia.
Hear
the words spoken to you as you read them.
Text-to-speech is also a useful proofreading
tool.
If
the voice reads what you scanned clearly, it
means
that the process has been successful. You
won't
have
to check your monitor to verify the accuracy
of
entry.

Image Adjustment - An invaluable tool for
"power
scanners!" In the scan test mode, you can
modify
the
contrast of a scanned image and remove any
blemishes
or markings. If you scan from colored
backgrounds
or
poor quality documents, you will be able to
make
the
transfer crystal clear. (Example: an old fax
may
have
dots and smudges and you can erase them so
your
                          recognition accuracy is improved.) This
feature is
exclusive to the IRISPen II - Executive!
Bar Codes Recognition - All the major barcodes
are
                          recognized.
Hand Printed Numbers - Write numbers with your
pen
and
the IRISPen II - Executive will recognize it.
Multiple Lines - Scan multiple lines of text
and
flush
it out in your application. This allows you to

quickly
scan all the text you want and only generate
one
                          output, saving time.
