Actually no, had a few updates in the last two months, each with new
features, and no charge. So in total it's cost me less than £40 including
the postal codes.

Hi Peter,

You had to pay just for postal codes? Wow what happens when they come out
with updates? Bet you'll have to pay for them too. Only cheap on the
surface.

All the best

It does support seven digit postal codes. I use it myself, although I did
have to pay £1.30 for the privilage of it accepting postal codes.

Hi Ibrahim,

The only app that is remotely accessible with the iPhone as far as GPS is
concerned, is Navigon. It's biggest downfall is that it doesn't support
postal codes. It is American and they don't think postal codes are
important from what I can see. None of the blindness related products
support postal codes either, so Wayfinder in my view is the best out there
at the moment.

Hi Steve.

I'd also add that with Symbian phones, you've far more choice when it
comes
to buying applications, there are a handful of stores, independent
developers selling their own products etc, your not just buying from a
single location as you have to on the IPod and IFone line of products.
Also

Peter, you talk of gps on the IFone, how accessible and more importantly
how

much information do you get from the product you mentioned which I can't
recall now *smile*. Have you tried wayfinder access for instance?

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Ibrahim,

Your message and others just illustrates that there are just as many
Symbian
apps if not more.

Hi Steve.

Or, if you can't even be bothered to learn those commands, you could
always
use a program like T9Nav, I bought it the other day for just over a fiver for my N86 and its a killer app for saving time and finding those hard to
get to functions.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Peter,

With respect, that's probably because you didn't take the time to learn
Symbian <Smile>.

For example, if Contacts is your sixth option in the menu, you don't
have
to
arrow at all, just press the menu and hit 6.

If you want the 11th option, hit Star, and the twelfth hit Hash. Bet
you
didn't know that?

If you want the 20th option then life gets a little trickier, but start
arrowing up rather than down.

Also you can set up to 8 shortcuts on your phone, which can be accessed
with
single keys, using the joystick and key1 and key2.

Because you really wanted to learn the iPhone, you did, and I respect
that,
but people don't always invest the time to learn Talks and the phone
itself.

All the best

Steve

I'd disagree and say it's a very good interface for the blind. The only
downfall is the typing but now that apps such as dragon dictate are
around
that problem is solved. I can work much quicker using the iphone/ipod
gestures then I ever could with Talks, having to try and move around a
screen and navigate menus.

Hi Hussein,

You seem to make some assumptions here.

I am totally blind and I use the iPod touch. It is not an efficient
interface for the blind, but totally usable, and pretty well
accessible.
But Apple have designed voiceover so that it can be used by totals.

It's a good music player, but I wouldn't want an iPhone for example, as
for
productivity it really sucks big time in my view.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your post. You're the first VI person I've come across
using
the
Touch and I'd be fascinated at just how much of the functionality of
the
device you are able to use whilst remaining with the stock firmware.
If
you
don't mind my prying, but you must have some residual sight to handle
the
touch interface? Would you say this is worth considering for others
needing
to look for a new media player (for example, if my iPod Video ever
kicks
the
bucket) or would it be too difficult to handle?

Now for your questions. For video conversion I use AVS Video
Converter.
It
is a paid for solution but offers a wide range of presets you can
choose
from, including for iPods. It's also accessible with my Supernova
screen
reader, or easy to see if you are using magnification. No doubt
someone
will offer a free solution as I'm sure I've heard of one myself, but
the
name escapes me right now.

HTH.

OK Folks!

Santa Claus brought me a great new little gadget for xmas! Yes, the
new
32
GB Ipod Touch. I've listened to a couple of podcasts re this and have
got
to grips pretty well with it's function and how to get around it. I
have
a
couple of questions however. I know there is a more specialised list
which
T and T run but wondered if there were many on the list? Also, does
anyone
have the sub details?

Now for my questions:

1 What is the easiest way to get .avi files onto the ipod? I believe
they
need to be converted first, how do people find the accessibility of
these
conversion tools? Also, where can I get the most accessible one from?

When I go into the music section of the front screen, is there a way to
easily switch between artis, album and song views? How easy is it to
set
up
play lists?

Anyone got any suggestions for really cool aps which are free? Also
though,
any paid ones which, again, are accessible?

I am pretty knocked out at how easy the touch screen is to manipulate.
As
an additional question, how accessible are apple mac computers in
general?
presumably, there is more facilities in the full blown voice over ap?
I
hear it is akin to window eyes? So, does that mean you can get the
list
of
links etc in safari?

Are there any more tutorials etc for the touch? And my final question,
How
similar is it to the I-phone?

Best wishes.

Steve
