What Chris has suggested is ideal if you want to transfer individual files or many files at once if zipped in seperate transfers.
It sounds like you might be wanting a centralised pool where you can both store data that's accessible to you both. 

Is this right?

If so there are several options.

FTP

www.sendspace.com
If a payed memebrship is taken out you can upload files, create folders and there's limit to how much data you send to it. 

and a really techy/geeky option is a Virtual Private Network , (VPN).
Where you see each others files through windows explorer, on each others machines as if they're stored locally but their not you are accessing them remotely through yoru internet connection.
If you need a hand with any of these options write back with a new subject line, 

EG.  What do I need to do to set up an FTP? What is an FTP etc.

Ammro, if your family has Windows Live Messenger, and you do too, you can use the sharing folders feature to share files that way. Hope that helps.

Could someone recommend an internet file sharing program (peer to peer) that is accessible please? I'll be using it to share files over the internet between me and my family exclusively, so I'm not after programs like BareShare or BitTorrent applications that are open to the public. I vaguely remember reading, or someone mentioning, a program that creates a folder on your computer, and any file you copy to that folder becomes available to the people you're sharing your files with for downloading. An application like this would be ideal.
