Thanks for your suggestion Pete.  I had at the back of my mind 
Real Alternative as a means of ending the REal Blues.  Apart from 
the hassel of file associations with Alternative I might just 
give it a go.

As to Crash recovery in IE, well of course I was forgetting the 
history list accessed via the IE command control-H, which is 
worth doing of course, but it would be so nice to have this 
automated.  Bet it wouldn't take more than a Windows based script 
to do it.
