Sleep mode will not conserve power but it would actuallyl prolong machine life. 
 It is the power cycling and heat cycling that takes place when a machine is 
powered on and off that can cause component failure.  However there is a 
balance, and in general if you are going to not use a PC overnight you might 
want to power down.  Léonie is correct certainly that the activities of hackers 
will be disrupted, I think not so much in terms of getting in since most 
machines are behind routers with built in firewalls now but at least when a 
machine is off if a bot has become installed (usually via scripting on a web 
page than through an exposed socket or service as was once the case) then the 
hacker cannot control that installed bot if the machine is off.
