Sleep mode will not conserve power but it would actuallyl prolong machine life. It is the power cycling and heat cycling that takes place when a machine is powered on and off that can cause component failure. However there is a balance, and in general if you are going to not use a PC overnight you might want to power down. Léonie is correct certainly that the activities of hackers will be disrupted, I think not so much in terms of getting in since most machines are behind routers with built in firewalls now but at least when a machine is off if a bot has become installed (usually via scripting on a web page than through an exposed socket or service as was once the case) then the hacker cannot control that installed bot if the machine is off.
