Speaking of Devils, I'm back!
Apart from the problem with loss of server connection till I've entered my
phone number on the technical help system, it hasn't done it again this week
yet! and that in order to get "Dave's TV" channel on SKY, it costs one pound a
month, when on others it's free! I have had no problems with SKY, and when I
have spoken to their staff, I have been able to understand them. Yes they
mostly come from north of the border, but they are at least British. Can't say
the same for BT! It is supposed to mean British, the B in BT isn't it.
I'm just waiting for Mr Honest to set up an alternative, and I believe Mr Purvy
is setting up a free channel with full audio description!
OK I have to go back downstairs, Jacob wants some help with his chain.
Be a Devil, as if you don't use it, you lose it.

Hi Phil
I suppose if you are used to Tiscali then maybe going with them is better the
devil you know?
I've never gone with any ISP phone packages combined with broadband because we
have to have a BT line to use ADSL in any case, and have never seen the point
in changing to make what might not ultimately be cheaper calls. We have the BT
Option 3 package which lets you make 01 and 02 calls free for up to 60 minutes
24 hours a day, with discounts to international destinations and UK mobiles.
Sky do provide their bills for both TV and broadband in Braille, together with
any other transactions you make with them such as replacement remote controls
or a new receiver etc.
I think all ISPs have their ups and downs in regard to speed connection,
drop-out etc, and the whole thing is a minefield that is deliberately meant to
confuzzle if you ask me (smile).
I hope you manage to find something you like, or re-locate happily with
Tiscali. I see they are advertising on TV and radio for a package costing
£6.49 a month for, again, the "up to" 8MB speed and evening and weekend calls.
They don't intimate a download cap though.

Hi Jackie,
Thanks for your comments, yes I had noted the earlier comments re Sky
and their charges for calling customer services.
As you say the "up to" phrase is very important here although living in
rural Northumberland as we do at the mo we only get a max of 2mb on our phone
line and I don't think it's ever actually gone above 1mb when I've done a test
so as we're moving to suburban Nottingham I think we should be able to get
around 5 or 6mb which will be a lot better!
We had ruled Sky out as we weren't sure if the landlord would let us
put up a dish but in speaking to him last night he is happy for this to happen
if we want hence the consideration of sky - we are planning on doing an initial
12-month rent so the contract length isn't as big an issue.
To be honest I think these combined phone / broadband packages aren't
that good anyway as I wonder how much we do actually spend on phone calls a
month when you consider that my wife and I each have 200 mins a month on our
mobiles and we can call each other for free on them as well as other family
members who are on the same network.
I suspect we'll end up staying with Tiscali simply as it will be
"easier" to transfer over and one less thing to have on the "to-do" list for
the next couple of weeks but that's not a decision I'm totally happy with.
hey ho life is full of choices!
Anyone else want to add to this?
cheers,
Phil

Hi Phil
As you have probably read, one or two people, myself included, have had
some issues with Sky. On my current package, I get a 40GB download cap and the
speed of "up to" 8GB, though our exchange only supports 6.2 at the present
time. Sky's Customer Services team is ok, but they charge you to use the 08705
number of course.
My son, as a fanatic online gamer, thinks Sky is the worst ISP we have
used. For the things Ian and I do with broadband though, it does the job for a
fiver a month on top of the TV package we use. We are BT phone customers so
don't use Sky Talk over and above that.
I think the most crucial thing everyone has to remember with broadband
in ADSL is the "up to" clause, which could mean literally anything these days.
The other thing is that most of them will contract you for at least a year, but
I believe Virgin.net don't, which is worth a thought.
Good luck in your search.
Jackie

Hi,
Due to an upcoming house move I am looking at what internet /
phone service provider I use.
I'm currently with Tiscali on their combined phone & broadband
package and have been with them for over 2 years without any problems although
I do note from some online comparisons I've done they're not the best for the
actual download speed you can get, customer service etc.
The other 2 companies I am thinking about is the new o2 package
which as an o2 pay-monthly customer gives me up to 8mb download speed for £7.50
per month or Sky with their combined tv, broadband and phone package.
I guess my question is what experiences (positive and negative)
people have of sky and o2 and if they're any other providers people would
recommend?
I do have a few essentials however like an unlimited download
allowance and keeping the phone line rental with Bt as it's a rented property
we're going into.
I await your valued feedback as ever!
many thanks,
Phil
