Barbara, I only solved my problem which was similar to yours by upgrading to Version 10 of Jaws.

There may be other ways ... but I didn't find one myself.

Subject: [access-uk] IE Problem

I am not sure if this problem is JAWS specific, so will
try this on both lists in the hope that someone can help.

Using a Dell netbook with XP Home and IE8 with JAWS 9. I
know JAWS 9 does not work perfectly with IE8 but I have
only recently started getting this problem. Not sure if
I've changed a setting inadvertently or what.
When I launch the Internet my Homepage is spoken and it
says no links. If I arrow up to the top of the page it
announces the top line, but then all I can get when
arrowing down or tabbing around is "Open parent document
button." I can't access the menus using Alt to see if
something is altered. No matter what site I go to this is
happening.
Any ideas?
