I'm the RNIB person involved with this event so I thought I'd reply. We're
not suggesting visually impaired people have to pay to get something
sighted people can get for free by going into a shop.
Yes, you can go into any Apple store and ask to have products demonstrated
and - chances are - the staff will be knowledgeable enough about the
accessibility options to demo with these. And if you buy an Apple product
you can sign up for some hourly training sessions once a week for a year
at a very cheap cost.
What you might find more difficult is getting the point of view of
visually impaired Apple users alongside the chance to ask questions of
those users and try things out on the products, all in the same place and
at the same time. We would thus hope that you get something from the day
beyond what the Apple shops and accessibility-oriented mailing lists and
websites offer.
The cost is to cover lunch, refreshments and the travelling costs of the
presenters, who are all giving their time for free. The Apple associate is
a partially sighted student who works part-time in an Apple store.
I hope that clarifies the situation a bit.
