[access-uk] How to tell how much life is left in a rechargable battery?

I've been driven of late to using more and more rechargable batteries.
Sometimes I am onorganised enough to get batteries of varying states of
discharge mixed up. Wonder if anyone knows of a method, or device, for guaging
how much life is left in a battery? I don't like putting nearly full batteries
in a charger, and I suspect the charger I have at the moment simply signals
that batteries have been charged simply by how long they have been in the
charger.
Any help advice appreciated.
