outgoing server requires authentication (in most e-mail clients,

Also, our POP3 service requires that you use Secure Sockets Layer
(SSL) with the POP and SMTP connection and use SMTP authentication.
This is to ensure that your e-mail address and password are not
subject to tampering.

I have been using the above configration with myhotmail account in
eudora for the last couple months.
If you are looking for an email client to access http servers such
as googmail, yahoo and a couple others, google for the free basic
email client named popkeeper. It does not allow for complicated
mail filtering etc but allows basic mail access and can be used portably.
