Hi Mo.

I receive both DLA and direct payments, my social services didn't take DLA in to consideration when assessing my application as DLA is a non means tested benefit.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Christine,
Does direct payment affect our DLA allowance? I was wondering if they'd take that if they allow us direct payment or do we keep it.
All the best
Mo

Either make a request for specialist equipment under SDS or request this when your up for review with them. Either a one-off payment, as I did, or if it is something on-going then you'd have to make this clear...

DLA and our mobility allowance isn't sufficient to pay for all the additional costs incurred on account of our disabilities. I.e. writing equipment is far cheaper in comparison with RNIB. I use a Perkins but have Never heard of my seeing friends spending that much on a pen!

Talking blood pressure monitors are outrageously priced as are kitchen and bathroom scales--we just don't have the choice of buying cheaply do we? Same with Braille watches, the cheapest is over £17 yet my daughter has just bought a silver plated one for £5 in the high street! The only way I can wake up in the morning is to use a shake awake and I am unable to set or see the large print one my friend bought for me! Now I believe there's a Braille shake awake alarm clock...but what cost? What about the luxury of seeing if the lights are on? We must use a light probe at a hideous cost--So our disability premiums struggle to keep up with our needs.

I actually Hate asking for help like this, but sometimes, in the case of me and my DBC, I just didn't have any option. I'm very grateful I eventually managed to obtain this wonder machine as with my ever decreasing hearing loss I can at least keep in contact with friends and family even when I can't hear on a telephone.

Make sure you ask for all you require whilst the funding is still available as I'm sure the government will be cutting this back too oneday!

Best of luck, Christine.----- Original Message ----- From: "Ibrahim Gucukoglu" <ibrahim_gucukoglu@xxxxxxxx>

Hi Christeen.

How insulting, to spell your name wrong *smile*. My apologies, I should be more careful in future LOL.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Christen.

Well, I've been thinking along the lines of asking whether I can spend some of my social care fund on a colourino as it could be useful in identifying clothes before I put them in the wash or when they come out of it, so your experience has certainly given me a little more confidence to do this.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Ibrahim, your quite right, this is exactly the same process as I went through--I was told, after I'd already found out myself, that the council were obliged to do it this way, by Law, but not all will follow the correct guidelines. I am actually getting direct payments in leu of vouchers, a scheme the councils are trying to phase out, but I insisted on me getting the same this year as I only require 4 hours per week so far, my need was with help to fund a DBC at over ten thousand pounds. I'm so happy I insisted on my rights as I couldn't live without my DBC. Christine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ibrahim Gucukoglu" <ibrahim_gucukoglu@xxxxxxxx>

Hi Christine.

I think different councils have different application processes, depending on that council's structure. In Peterborough, I had to apply to the adult social care team who came and performed a financial assessment and helped me do all the paperwork, the funds get paid to me by the primary care trust in to my nominated (though separate) bank account. I have to send them financial statements every three months or so, showing exactly what I used the money for, plus of course bank records to back said statements up, but even there I'm lucky as my support worker used to work in the financial services industry and thus knows his way round excel with uncanny proficiency *smile*.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Peter, SDS is now in place rather than you applying to your council as you used to! Sorry, your behind in times as well as emails as I've already answered your question. I hope people will look into SDS and use it. Christine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Holdstock" <peterholdstock@xxxxxxx>

Apply for SDS and ask for help with specialist equipment. This is the Only way I know of doing it and it worked for me. Christine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janet Tuggey" <janet@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jaws-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; <bcab@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone knows of where I can apply for help with the cost of Access Technology as I'm unemployed at the moment and would really like to purchase such things as a scanner plus software, and a full working version of JAWS for starters (I have the demo version of JAWS 11 and am fed up with having to reboot after 40 minutes, I also have NVDA which is pretty
good, but still prefer JAWS).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers
