No, that is Not That, it is your Legal Right to have access to Direct payments if you are registered blind or partially sighted. A person with a dual impairment has a few more rights but non the less, you are still entitled to direct payments...This is quite new and even social services themselves aren't very clear on our rights, so you just have to search them on the net, read and learn all about what your entitled to and fight, it is actually illegal for social services not to allow you access. I'm no use at searching or I'd post a link, I have attachments I can post but not sure if the group allow attachments. Well I was turned down for this direct payment so that is that! They turned me down on my first phone call and when I insisted on the assessment etc, I was still turned down! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christine Weetman" <goatmum@xxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2010 7:28 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Help with the cost of Access Technologyit took me over a year to get my first payment! Then I had to fight for the next year after only half a year! lol Now I'm so glad I did as my DBC package was over ten grand! Still miracles could occur. SDS is Self Directed Support and in applying for this you must ask for an amount to help fund expensive equipment which you can not otherwise afford, I have just been fortunate enough to obtain a DBC, DeafBlind Communicator, for which I was given a one-off payment. I have it fully covered for six years and was given a full days training to ensure I am able to use the equipment. You can't ask for Normal things like, washingmachine, cooker, sofa etc but if you can justify why you need Jaws asapposed to an available free screenreader I'm sure this will be acceptable. From what I can understand the goverment will allow a budget of so manyhours per week and if you don't need all that time then you can request thefunding to be used on specialist equipment.I had to be pretty insistant and know all my rights, but got there in theend. Sorry for the long email. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
