Hi Steve

This is kind of what I've been getting at. Video and sound drivers aside, I wondered how a totally blind person could install Windows in the modern day on their own without prompts, sighted assistance from wives, husbands, sons or daughters, or anyone else for that matter. Given the drivers you need apart from those Windows provides, I just don't know how it can be done completely unaided. But ... well good luck to anyone who has achieved it completely unaided with no teaching first.

I find it interesting that's all.

Jackie

Hi Andy,

Most of them are not tricky, except for installing Windows. Now that I
wouldn't recommend without sight, unless you really know what you are doing. But updating video and sound drivers? I would say that is relatively easy.
Just run an installer and hit next a couple of times, making sure you
uncheck some free games that some of them want to install on your system,
and that's all there is to it. Now agreed, it could knock your screen
reader out the water, but for me, I have never have a video or sound driver leave me without the use of a computer. I am just saying that most of this
is a lack of confidence on the blind person's part, and more usually,
someone else telling them they can't do it without sighted assistance, which is worse than the blind person themselves not having confidence. Yes, there
are risks, but it is certainly doable.

All the best

Steve

You see Steve - these things that are difficult without sight but possible,
I'm sure many of us would like to know about, and how to do, it's part of
our independent living, but also mostly because we just don't have sighted
help most of the time. Has anybody put together any work arounds for these
tricky tasks, when there is non-sighted help available? -

Andy

| Hi George,
|
| Dunno. All I can say is that I update all my drivers all the time with
very
| few problems, unless the driver itself is causing problems. I have had
this
| occasionally, particularly with an updated IDE driver. The system
wouldn't
| boot after it, and I had to get back to last known good configuration.
That
| is real fun without sight, but possible <Smile>.

|
| Hi George,
|
| This is incorrect. With both Window-Eyes and JAWS, you can easily do it.
| What happens is that on the reboot when the video drivers have been
updated,
| both of them will ask you to reboot while they update the video
intercepts.
| You are behind the times <Smile>. In fact, I even tried it with Hal and
it
| works.
|
| All the best

|
| Hi Andy,
|
| You don't need to uninstall the old ATI drivers, but I'd be a shade wary
| about installing new video drivers without sighted help to hand. It will
| most likely break the video chain to your screen reader, leaving you
without
| speech, and the necessity to re-install your screen reader.
|
| George.

|
| Hi all -
|
| I'm pasting my message from yesterday here again, as it got no responce,
and
| I'm sure there are people on this list that can help, so please do if you
| can, it's always apreciated.
|
| Start of message:
|
| Hi all -
|
| Ok, a scan of my PC tells me that certain drivers need updating, and I'm
| trying to understand quite what to do, and what I need to download!
|
| When I click on the link from driveragent.com to update the driver, the
page
| that comes up says:
|
| "The following packages will provide display drivers and capture drivers
| that can be used with various video capture programs."
|
| And then it lists what is in the package, the first thing being the
display
| driver, is this all I'll need, or will I need the rest of the package that
| includes things like 'catalyst control centre' or the 'WDM Integrated
| Driver.'
|
| Can I ask too, if I need to uninstall from 'add/remove'
| within the control
| panel, the existing ati drivers that these updates are to replace?
|
| Thanks as ever -
|
| Andy
