Hi Billy,
A high definition multimedia interface is a digital audio video connector.
You can connect other computers to it, video game consoles, TV top boxes,
etc. Its just another alternative to coaxial cable and scart plugs.  I
believe its relatively new technology, about 3 years on the scene. Probably
one of these sockets you'll never use. Sounds like you have a nice laptop
