Googlemail now works with Imap. Your mail client connects to the Imap server like it would with Pop, but unlike Pop it only downloads the headers. It's then your choice as to whether to download the entire message or not. The folders that your mail client displays are actually folders stored on the server and not folders created by your mail client. Hope this helps.
