Hi John, well, I guess we'll find out soon, not sure if Chris is saying this, but James has said that Windows U should start Narrator talking immediately after boot-up; if we think about it, it should work like that, otherwise it would defeat it's own purpose of helping blind users get started! -

Hi Andy, I've never run Vista, only xp. I'd never heard of the alt n keystroke till Chris mentioned it. I've never known a situation where Narrator comes up talking without first being selected and started. The way I start it is to type narrator into the run box. Will I need to follow Win U with Alt Nlike under Vista? - Andy----- Original Message ----- From: "john coley" <johncoley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 7:19 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Getting started with an XP asus 901 netbookHi Andy, Narrator doesn't come up talking unless it's been set previously.First time running the accessibility manager you are presented with thethree options, namely magnifier, narrator and onscreen keyboard. They are all off at that point. To start one of them, in this case narrator tab tothe combo box, choose narrator, which is the second item, then tab to options for narrator, which if I remember is one tab down. The firstoption is start. Once you've started it you can set its options, includingsetting it to come up at windows startup. What you're not telling me is what happens under XP on a new machine, bootedfor the first time, if like Barbara says, there are some initial screensrequiring input info, ahead of full boot up, then how can Narrator have been loaded? It might just be me, but sometimes what you say is a bit vague, but I doappreciate that you are trying to help - Andy----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Hallsworth" <christopherhallsworth71@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 2:53 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Getting started with an XP asus 901 netbookNo. Press Windows u, then alt n. -- Chris Hallsworth E-mail: christopherhallsworth71@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx MSN: CH9675@xxxxxxxxxxx Skype: chrishallsworth7266----- Original Message ----- From: "ANDY COLLINS" <Andy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 11:34 AM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Getting started with an XP asus 901 netbookWell I've just pressed alt N on this Vista laptop, and nothing happened, it issued the tone that says it's an invalid key stroke! - Andy----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Hallsworth" <christopherhallsworth71@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, January 05, 2009 10:31 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Getting started with an XP asus 901 netbookIn Vista it launches Narrator, since Windows u actually brings up Easeof Access Centre not Utility Manager. This machine comes preloaded with XP, is it possible to get started on this machine without sighted help? Can anybody tell me which screens come up first, and how to get past them to the point where I can make use of Narrator?
