Andy, using XP and have never launched Narrator before. Just tried and Windows U started speech right away. Good luck with the Asus, it's a great little gadget!

Thanks James; Yes, I know about waiting for the Windows music, just seemed unclear from some things said, if Win U would produce speech from Narrator at that stage of things -

Windows+U makes Narator come up in XP. Obveously, wait until you hear the XP setup music, don't just press the power button and then try and run it, because it won't work.

Hi John

So, if I get you right, on a new XP machine, after powering on, Windows U
won't make Narrator come up talking? Will I need to follow Win U with Alt N
like under Vista? -

Hi Andy, Narrator doesn't come up talking unless it's been set previously.
First time running the accessibility manager you are presented with the
three options, namely magnifier, narrator and onscreen keyboard. They are all off at that point. To start one of them, in this case narrator tab to
the combo box, choose narrator, which is the second item, then tab to
options for narrator, which if I remember is one tab down. The first
option is start. Once you've started it you can set its options, including
setting it to come up at windows startup.

OK Chris, this lands me on the Narrator button, so this has to be
activated,
Narrator doesn't just come up talking from those key strokes; this
doesn't
matter when JFW is loaded, but would do if there was not speech at all!

What you're not telling me is what happens under XP on a new machine,
booted
for the first time, if like Barbara says, there are some initial screens
requiring input info, ahead of full boot up, then how can Narrator have
been
loaded?

It might just be me, but sometimes what you say is a bit vague, but I do
appreciate that you are trying to help -

No. Press Windows u, then alt n.

Well I've just pressed alt N on this Vista laptop, and nothing
happened,
it issued the tone that says it's an invalid key stroke! -

In Vista it launches Narrator, since Windows u actually brings up Ease
of Access Centre not Utility Manager. Guess Microsoft wanted
consistency
though and Windows e is already taken up.

Well I can do it without sighted help. Windows U, then alt n.

This is different to Vista then Chris? With Vista, I couldn't get
to
Narrator until I'd by-passed a couple of screens with sighted
help! -

Narrator will speak that. Usually you go straight into Windows
setup.

Chris - Isn't there a screen first that asks for a user name or
some log on details? -

Andy, you should be able to use Narrator from the word go. As
soon
as you hear sound or music, press Windows u, and Narrator will
load.

Hi all -

Firstly, many thanks to all that help me understand about
netbooks, and enabled me to make my choice of the Asus 901.

This machine comes preloaded with XP, is it possible to get
started on this machine without sighted help? Can anybody tell
me
which screens come up first, and how to get past them to the
point
where I can make use of Narrator?

Thanks -

Andy
